Direct burial cable is a kind of communications or transmissions power cable which is specially designed to be hidden under the ground without almost any extra covering, sheathing, or piping to protect it.

Direct burial cable is a special type cable that is designed to be run in a funnel underground with no use of conduit to surround it. The electrical wires are encased in a thermoplastic case that seals out moisture and protects the wires within.

Most Direct burial cable is built to unique tolerances to heat, wetness, conductivity, and soil level of acidity. Unlike standard telecommunications and power cables, which have only a thin coating of insulation and a waterproof outer cover, Direct burial cable involves multiple layers of heavy metallic-banded sheathing, heightened by heavy rubber masks, shock absorbing gel, covered thread-fortified waterproof tape, and stiffened by a heavy metal core.

Direct burial cable is usually black with tagging to identify the natural wire. UF cable is grey and comes in rolls that look like NM cable. Because it is resistant to moisture and other elements that Mother Nature can throw at it, it is a clear choice for underground installation. Be sure to figure in volt quality drop when running a long distance with this cable and upsize the gauge of wiring were required to accommodate the load linked to it.
